Interview with Green Mum Rebecca Kelley
We’re getting up close and personal with green mums around the blogsphere. Mums all over the world are sounding off about the benefits of raising baby green. I’m trying to lure them over here at the Green Baby Spot to share a few tid bits about their green parenting experiences.
I caught up with Rebecca Kelley of the Green Baby Guide, a great green baby blog, run by Rebecca and Joy, enlightening parents on down-to-earth ways to save time, money, and the planet. This is what Rebecca had to say about her green parenting experiences with her now two and a half year old daughter Audrey:
So how did u become a green mum?
While I was pregnant I was worried about all the stuff a baby seemed to require: diapers, blankets, bouncy seats, car seats, booster seats, high chairs, a crib, bassinet, cradle, activity mat, thermometer, wipes warmer, glider. . . . I didn’t even know what half of it was—so I wondered if it was really necessary. I became a green mother when I made the conscious decision not to buy all the “must-haves” the baby industry wants us to buy!
Do you you use cloth or disposable diapers / nappies?
Cloth. We used prefolds with covers, which is the cheapest way to go here in the States. I’ve also tried various pocket diapers such as bumGenius.
Which diaper / nappy would you recommend & why?
I’d recommend plain old prefolds with covers if you’re trying to be as cheap as possible. If you like the cuteness of all-in-one cloth diapers, I’d recommend bumGenius. If you don’t have a clothes dryer, pocket diapers will be easier to line-dry than prefolds.
Any advice for mums considering cloth diapers / nappies?
Remember that washing diapers has an effect on the environment. We’ve discovered at the Green Baby Guide that it’s okay to wash diapers in cold water. We’ve also found that we can skip soaking and extra rinsing and simply wash diapers on a heavy cycle just like any other load of laundry. This really helps save water and energy.
What do you enjoy most about running a green mum blog?
Both Joy and I have found that we have a lot to say about raising babies in an environmentally-conscious way. It’s great to have the ability to share our ideas, questions, and concerns with a whole community of parents who care about raising their kids with the planet in mind.
