Eco Spotlight On Thrupenny Bits
We did a feature on Thrupenny Bits a few weeks ago and some of you wanted more information on this fabulous and functional invention. I caught up with Melissa Wyatt, the genius behind Thrupenny Bits. She appears in the featured picture, where she’s actually using the bag with her youngest son.
She told us that motherhood inspired her business. After she had her first son, like many new moms, she had a tuff time breastfeeding, and breastfeeding away from home was no picnic either. She found herself having to drag along several pillows when she left the house, to aid in breastfeeding. This as you could imagine was frustrating and cumbersome.
She started dreaming of a pillow that was easy to carry around, and could be used discreetly when she needed to breastfeed. Something that didn’t scream, “this is for breastfeeding!” This dream gave birth to Thupenny Bits. Melissa set out to create an alternative to the cumbersome, unstylish breastfeeding pillows available on the market.
She created a stylish crescent shaped bag, with an inner sack filled with foam beads (like what you find in bean bag), or hypo-allergenic buck wheat hulls. It has a strap that ties at the top, which you can use to carry it over your shoulder, or hang over the pram handles. Honestly, it looks more like a fashionable bag than a breastfeeding pillow!
In explaining how to go about using Thrupenny Bits, she advises to simply tie the straps around your waist, and whilst seated place the baby on top of the cushion, facing you. The beads mould to the shape of your baby, and the crescent shape hugs around your waist, enabling baby to curl around you in a position conducive to breastfeeding. This will free up at least one arm so you can continue to sip your tea, savor lunch, or text from your mobile!
According to Melissa, “once you and your baby have decided to stop breastfeeding for good, you can simply take out the inner sack and viola, you have a lovely bag to carry all your baby paraphernalia around in, until the next one comes along, in which case re-insert the inner bean bag and away you go!” We love that!
We wish Melissa success in getting the word out about this marvellous product. I’m still toying with the idea of baby number two, but if I should ever get there… I’m definitely using Thrupenny Bits!
